HOW IT WORKS

Turn a future expense into a smaller monthly problem

A sinking fund is simply money set aside little by little for something you know is coming. This calculator turns the total amount and due date into a weekly or monthly savings target.

Start with the real total

Use the amount you expect the expense to cost, then subtract anything already saved for it.

Give it a deadline

The months remaining determine how quickly the rest needs to be saved.

Add a cushion if needed

For expenses that tend to grow, a small extra cushion can make the target more realistic.

Sinking fund questions without the jargon

What should I use a sinking fund for?

Annual bills, holidays, car repairs, school costs, home projects, vacations and other expenses that are not monthly but are not really surprises either.

Is a sinking fund the same as an emergency fund?

No. A sinking fund is for a known future expense. An emergency fund is for the things you did not plan for.

What if I cannot save the calculated amount?

That tells you something useful: the deadline, the total cost or another part of the plan may need to change. It is better to see that early than the week the bill arrives.

This calculator is for planning estimates. Costs and timing can change, so update the numbers when real life does.
