Weekly Meal Cost Calculator
Plan the dinners, add the real costs and see what the week works out to per dinner, per serving and per month.
Turn the dinner plan into actual numbers
This calculator starts with the dinners you plan to make, the average ingredient cost for each dinner and the extras that tend to sneak into the grocery cart.
Weekly dinner cost
Planned dinners are multiplied by your average ingredient cost, then weekly extras are added to show the estimated dinner total.
Monthly estimate
The weekly total is multiplied by 4.33 to estimate an average month instead of pretending every month has exactly four weeks.
Cost per serving
The weekly dinner total is divided across the number of planned dinners and people eating, giving you a simple estimated cost per serving.
Meal-cost questions from real family life
What counts as an extra?
Think sides, drinks, snacks, convenience items or ingredients that are part of dinner week but are easy to forget when estimating the main meals.
What if some dinners cost much more than others?
Use an average that reflects the whole week. A taco night and a steak night do not need identical costs—the average is there to smooth out the difference.
Should leftovers lower my cost per serving?
They can. If a dinner regularly creates lunches or another full meal, count those additional servings when estimating the value you get from the ingredients.
Why compare against a weekly dinner budget?
It gives you a decision point before shopping. If the plan is already over budget on paper, you can swap a meal or adjust extras before the cart is full.
Food prices and serving sizes vary. Use this calculator as a planning estimate based on the costs that are normal for your household.
Use the dinner number in the bigger food budget
Once the planned dinners have a real cost, compare that number with the rest of the food spending instead of treating meal planning and grocery budgeting like two separate problems.
